Choosing between an enclosed and open trailer starts with what you are moving. Both can be useful, but they offer different loading arrangements, protection and towing characteristics.

An enclosed trailer provides a roof and walls that help protect cargo from rain, road spray and debris during travel. It can be a good option for furniture, household boxes, business supplies and other items that benefit from covered transportation. It is not a guarantee against water intrusion or theft, so cargo should still be packed and secured properly.

An open trailer can be convenient for compatible equipment, vehicles or outdoor materials. Depending on its design, it may offer easier access from multiple sides and more flexibility for certain loading tasks. Cargo is exposed to the elements and must be secured appropriately.

For an enclosed trailer, check interior height and width as well as door and ramp openings. For an open trailer, check usable deck space, fenders, ramps and load clearances. Measure your largest item before reserving.

Trailer weight varies by construction and equipment. Do not assume an open trailer is always lighter or that an enclosed trailer is too heavy for your vehicle. Compare actual specifications and the loaded weight against your vehicle’s ratings.
